I am familiar with Vicente Avella's work through two previous releases, Rising (2018) and Physics of Light (2022). I found his explorations of the keyboard fascinating and enlightening.

Night Music is described as a step away from previous works, in that his setting or mindset, if you will, was simplified to de-stress in the confusing world that surrounds us. I welcome the change and feel optimistic, just knowing this information, as I move forward in my listening journey.

Vicente commented: I layered pianos to create a distinct voice for each track, played with delays and reverbs—often stacking multiple types at once—and used filters and processing on traditional orchestral instruments until they no longer sounded like themselves. Working this way changed how I performed. I wasn’t just playing the music; I was responding to the sounds as they came back to me, shaped and transformed.

Based on that information, a potential listener may view this music quite differently, thus hearing it from a more personal perspective. Individual listening experiences can vary widely, and this example offers insight into an artist’s creative process.

I found the cover art striking, with the tree’s branches illuminated against the night sky. The branches’ multiplicity may represent the music and the changes it reaches for in each track.

“Dusk” begins as we go into the different levels of the nighttime cycle. It serves as a gentle introduction at 1:49. The keys resonate with echoing tones, with a bass drone underlying the gentle strokes. It reaches a climax and ends suddenly.

“Night Song” begins with a waltz-like rhythm as a synth enters, creating a soft layer for the higher-pitched keys to take their place amongst the ambiance, layered textures, and colors. Nighttime should be a time to unwind and relax, and this track defines that mindset.

“Strolling Under the Moonlight” picks up the tempo to emulate the desired effect of strolling, but with a purposeful rhythm. The background sounds push the lead notes forward, and their elegance exemplifies the music’s gentleness and the perfection of the scenery being created in your mind’s eye. You are now walking beside the artist.

“Stars” can fill our night sky on a clear night. Their distance is incomprehensible, but to the human eye, it is sheer beauty. They have led sailors of old to their destinations, created wonders of science, and discovered vast and incredible things. I have been fascinated by their beauty and wonder my entire life. To me, the music sounded like a personal lullaby. Lovely notes flow from the piano’s keys, and the rhythms are heavenly, a tribute to those shining lights above.

“Quiet Light” is an interesting title because it shows how light can vary in strength and effect. Light being quiet is soft and an invitation to immerse yourself in it. The gentle meditative nature of this music is reflected nicely in the track titles, and here it exemplifies its meaning perfectly. The current focus (for meditative purposes) is the bass drone-like sound, and the overlying piano keys resonate with the higher notes and pastel colors of peace and stillness.

“Serene” continues the flow and consistency of this feeling of embrace through the music; you can feel it. It’s yet another invitation to partake in the release of tension and the experience of inner peace and joy, felt only through the auditory realm, with thoughts removed, creating a completely new space in time. Serenity is achieved through the keyboard’s notes.

“Sleep” is our ultimate phase of renewal, essential to our ongoing existence and overall health. To those with the distractions of the mind that have trouble getting the rest they need, take a moment to explore this music before retiring for the evening. Slow tempos and measured rhythms populate this track to induce the sense of “sleep” and where we need to go to get there.

“Fireflies” are one of the miracles of nature that have fascinated people for millennia. To evoke a sense of appreciation and wonder, the music must do so without exception. Right from the outset, the keys draw you with a natural flow. Without anticipation, the melody is immersive, with an ongoing layer of sensation that you find engaging, as relaxation and excitement merge for just the right feeling as the fireflies dance in your head.

“Gazing at the Universe” is one of humanity’s great pastimes, dating back millions of years. The discoveries are endless, at times prolific and life changing. Yet, despite all the knowledge we have about advanced technologies and high-power telescopes, many mysteries remain. Indeed, that fact only drives us to reach for the stars.  At 5:37, it directly reflects the expansiveness of the universe and our endless devotion to exploring it. The music has a mysterious ambiance, with the synths and the higher notes from the keys tinkle and stretch out over the layers, adding to its overall beauty and making you think about what the word “universe” means.

“Lunar Dust” was an interesting transition in thought and sound. To move from the idea of a universe to dust is a total mindset shift. All living things originated from cosmic dust, which is astonishing.  Music continues the path of reflective thought (if you wish), yet is gentle enough to free the spirit and provide the relaxing, meditative state you desire. The keys and synths are ambient and spacey, and perfectly balanced.

The “Synchronous Rotation” of the Earth and all the planets is essential to the ongoing existence of all life. The events of the seasons here on earth are due to the rotation of the globe we inhabit. The slow dance of this music and its tones gradually shifts in tempo to mirror the Earth’s spin. Different sounds enter and merge; the synths and keys become one. The colorful, textured synth layers once again enhance the lead keys’ lovely tones.

As we reach the end of the nighttime cycle, “Dawn (feat. bea)” awakens on the horizon of a new day. That one thought brings the light and optimism of another day of opportunity to enjoy your life and share it with another. This time, we have wordless vocals to accompany the music, sounding like a chant with a pulsating beat and thoroughly placed keys. The tempo rises like the sun over the horizon; the music is filled with joy and purpose. Another cycle begins with promise and hope.

Night Music is a triumphant return for Vicente Avella. It is a landmark release with exceptional values of composition, structure, sound, and production. This is a journey you will want to relive.
